The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has refuted a viral WhatsApp message that falsely claims the Government of India is distributing free laptops to students under a so-called ‘Students’ Laptop Scheme 2025’.
The PIB’s fact-checking unit declared the message fake and cautioned the public against falling for such fraudulent schemes.
Viral Message Misleads Students
The misleading WhatsApp message alleges that the Centre has launched a laptop distribution scheme for students. It also asks recipients to submit personal details through an online link.
The message has gained wide circulation in recent days, preying on students and parents who are eager for digital access.
PIB Fact Check clarified that the Government of India has announced no such scheme. It urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid clicking on suspicious links.
Officials highlighted that scammers design such fraudulent messages to extract sensitive personal information, including names, addresses, and bank details. Clicking on these links can also expose users to phishing attempts or malware attacks, putting their data and devices at risk.
“⚠️This message is FAKE! ✅The Government of India has announced NO such scheme. 🚫Do NOT click on suspicious links or share your personal information,” the PIB tweeted from its official account.

Call for Verification Through Official Channels
The government has repeatedly warned citizens against trusting unverified messages circulated through WhatsApp, social media, or SMS. The PIB emphasised that any genuine scheme or policy announcement will always be available through official government portals or verified social media handles.
Citizens are advised to cross-check information on pib.gov.in or follow @PIBFactCheck on X (formerly Twitter) for timely updates and fact checks.
The ‘Students’ Laptop Scheme 2025’ is a baseless rumour. The Government of India has not launched any such initiative. People must remain cautious to avoid falling victim to online scams.
