The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit has decisively debunked a viral WhatsApp message that falsely claims India Post is offering a ₹20,000 Christmas gift to citizens who participate in an online quiz.
Official verification confirms that no such scheme exists and that India Post has issued no festive promotion of this kind on its official website, indiapost.gov.in.
The misleading message circulated widely ahead of Christmas, exploiting festive sentiment and public trust in government institutions.
The fabricated visual mimicked official branding and urged recipients to click a suspicious link to claim the cash reward.
PIB Fact Check examined the claim and categorically declared it false, warning citizens against engaging with the message or sharing personal information.
Investigators noted that the image used classic phishing tactics. It combined Christmas-themed graphics, authoritative language, and a sense of urgency to lure unsuspecting users.
The embedded link redirected users to an unverified webpage designed to harvest sensitive data such as phone numbers, banking details, and identification information.
Officials stressed that India Post does not run cash giveaway schemes through quizzes, WhatsApp links, or unofficial portals.
Any genuine government initiative appears only on authenticated websites and verified social media handles.
PIB urged citizens to rely exclusively on official sources and to report suspicious claims immediately.
Fake Festive Freebie Unmasked
The fake Christmas offer closely mirrors earlier frauds exposed in 2025, including a viral claim of a ₹20,000 ‘subsidy’ linked to Chhath Puja. In that case as well, scammers used festival-related messaging to create false credibility and trigger impulsive responses.
Authorities say such repetition shows an organised pattern of digital fraud that resurfaces during major festivals and public holidays.
Cybersecurity experts warn that holiday seasons consistently see a spike in phishing attempts. Scammers capitalise on increased online activity and emotional triggers such as gifts, bonuses, and government relief. These attacks often lead to identity theft, financial loss, and long-term data misuse.
PIB Fact Check also confirmed that no corroborating announcement appeared on official government channels or on X, formerly Twitter, since December 2025.

The absence of any official communication further invalidates the claim and reinforces the conclusion that the message is a scam.
The government reiterated that public awareness remains the strongest defence against digital fraud. Citizens must verify information before forwarding messages, clicking links, or providing details.
PIB advised users to cross-check claims with official portals and to treat unsolicited prize announcements with scepticism, especially when they demand quick action.
As misinformation and cyber fraud continue to evolve, authorities emphasised that vigilance, verification, and responsible sharing are essential civic duties. Festive cheer, officials warned, should never override caution in the digital space.
