The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check Unit has debunked a viral social media claim alleging that the Central government is providing Rs 2,500 every month to unemployed citizens under the ‘Prime Minister Unemployment Allowance Scheme’.
PIB clarified that no such scheme exists and urged the public not to trust or circulate posts making false promises of financial assistance in the government’s name.

The agency warned that fraudsters often use fabricated welfare schemes to lure people into sharing sensitive personal and financial information.
Such messages typically direct users to fake registration websites or suspicious links designed to steal data, including bank account details, Aadhaar numbers, OTPs and other confidential information.
PIB advised citizens to verify every government welfare scheme through myScheme, the Centre’s official portal that helps users identify schemes based on their eligibility. It confirmed that the portal does not list any scheme called the ‘Prime Minister Unemployment Allowance Scheme’.
The fact-checking unit also encouraged people to report suspicious claims related to government schemes through its official WhatsApp and email channels so that misleading content can be verified and acted upon promptly.
The latest advisory comes as authorities continue to crack down on online misinformation and financial fraud carried out through fake government schemes.
Officials have repeatedly urged citizens to rely only on verified government websites and official announcements before applying for any welfare programme or sharing personal information online.
