Bollywood actor Yami Gautam has revisited a light-hearted memory from her formative years in theatre, recalling how an awkward delivery of a dialogue unexpectedly made her stand out and left an entire room laughing.
Speaking during promotions of her latest film Haq, the actor reflected on her early exposure to theatre at school, when the art form was still new to students.
She narrated how a dramatic line, meant to sound intense, took on an entirely different tone when she delivered it.
Yami recounted that each student had to perform the same line in their own style before getting another turn.
When her moment came, she delivered the line in a manner so unusual that it sent her classmates into fits of laughter.
Although she remained serious during the performance, the reaction surprised her.
The teacher, she recalled, compared her delivery to that of a ‘street performer’, a comment Yami now looks back on with amusement.
At the time, she chose to see it as a win, noting that at least her dialogue was remembered.
Learning the Director’s Vision
Reflecting on her journey since those early days, Yami also spoke about the role of a director in shaping an actor’s performance.
She emphasised that while an actor may approach a character in multiple ways, it is the director who provides clarity and direction.
According to her, actors ultimately serve as the medium through which a director’s vision comes alive on screen. Submitting to that creative guidance, she said, adds to the enjoyment of the craft rather than limiting it.
Yami’s latest film, Haq, draws inspiration from the landmark Supreme Court case of Mohd Ahmed Khan v Shah Bano Begum.
The judgment established that maintenance under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code applies to all citizens, regardless of religion.
With Haq receiving positive attention, the actor’s anecdote offers a reminder that even moments of awkwardness can play a meaningful role in shaping an artist’s confidence and identity.
