
A grand cultural celebration marking the centenary year of legendary Indian filmmaker Raj Kapoor will be held in Singapore on August 23.
Organised by Respect India, the event aims to honour the cinematic legacy of the iconic showman while deepening India-Singapore cultural ties.
Prof Bimlesh Badhwa, Senior Professor at the National University of Singapore, officially unveiled the event’s poster in Singapore today. He emphasised that such cultural initiatives will further strengthen bilateral relations and promote shared heritage between the two nations.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is chairing the Raj Kapoor Centenary Year Celebration. Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari and acclaimed film director Rahul Rawail, who once assisted Raj Kapoor, are serving as vice-chairpersons.
Key members of the organising committee include Dr Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts; Vikas Singh, Senior Advocate and former President, Supreme Court Bar Association; Prof. Anil Kumar from Delhi School of Economics; Prof. Vijaylakshmi Nanda, Principal of Miranda House; Anant Vijay, journalist and film scholar; and Yatindra Mishra, a renowned expert in arts, literature, and cinema.
Celebration goes global
Besides Singapore, the Raj Kapoor Centenary Celebration will also take place in other international locations, including Mauritius, Uzbekistan, Moscow, and Kathmandu, along with Delhi and Mumbai.
Organising committee members Sarvjeet Dutt, Manikant Rai, Dr Manish Kumar Chaudhary, and Palak Srivastava presented the proposal for the Singapore leg during their meeting with Team Singapore.
The event promises to be a fitting tribute to a cinematic legend whose work continues to resonate globally.
