Actress and producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas has joined the short film Anuja as an executive producer. The film has already earned accolades, including the live-action short award at the 2024 HollyShorts Film Festival, and now, as reported by Variety, it has been shortlisted for the 2025 Academy Awards in the live-action short film category.

Directed by Adam J Graves and produced by Suchitra Mattai, Anuja follows the life of a 9-year-old girl, Anuja, who works in a back-alley garment factory alongside her older sister, Palak. The narrative delves into Anuja’s heart-wrenching dilemma, one that will shape both her future and her family’s fate. The film explores themes of childhood adversity and the difficult choices children often face under harsh circumstances.

In a statement, Priyanka Chopra express her pride in being part of the impactful project: “This beautiful film shines a spotlight on a subject that affects millions of children around the world, who are faced with the impossible decision between a future they cannot yet see and the immediate realities of their present. Anuja is a poignant, thought-provoking piece that makes us reflect deeply on the power of choices and how they shape the course of our lives. I am immensely proud to be associated with such a phenomenal and impactful project.”

Collaboration With Salaam Baalak Trust And Shine Global

The film is produce in collaboration with the Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT), a nonprofit founded by Mira Nair’s family that supports street and working children. Additionally, Anuja teams up with Shine Global, known for its Academy Award-winning films such as War/Dance (2007) and Inocente (2012), and Krushan Naik Films. Mindy Kaling is also one of the producers on the project, and Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor has boarded Anuja as an executive producer as well.

The film’s authenticity is further bolster by the performance of lead actor Sajda Pathan. Pathan’s personal journey adds a layer of depth and realism to her portrayal of Anuja.

A Strong Team Behind The Project

Commenting on Priyanka Chopra’s involvement, Suchitra Mattai said, “Priyanka’s faith in the power of Anuja’s story means a lot to us, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her join our team.” With the support of influential names in the industry, including Chopra, Kaling, and Monga Kapoor, Anuja is poise to make a significant impact as it moves closer to its Oscar contention.
