Actress Preity Zinta has spoken about the transformation of Hindi cinema since she entered the film industry in the late 1990s.

The actress recalled witnessing major developments in filmmaking, from changes in sound recording to the adoption of digital cameras.

Preity Zinta remembered making her early films at a time when the industry was experimenting with new approaches to storytelling. She particularly pointed to ‘Kya Kehna’ as an important project at the beginning of her career.

The ‘Veer Zaara’ actress highlighted the arrival of live sound as another significant development. She recalled how ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ in 2000 used live sound, reducing the industry’s dependence on traditional dubbing. She said filmmakers have since moved from shooting on film to using digital cameras.

Modern technology gives production teams more scope for corrections during post-production. Earlier, filmmakers had fewer options to make such changes.

Preity Zinta observed a clear transformation in the subjects explored by Bollywood. She said Hindi cinema once produced many stories revolving around NRI characters and romances.

According to the actress, filmmakers now increasingly turn towards themes connected with India, including national pride, historical events and the armed forces.

Preity Zinta added that comedy films have developed a different feel, although she believes the overall approach to filmmaking has not changed dramatically. She explained that actors earlier depended more on dubbing to correct dialogue, whereas filmmakers now generally rely on live recordings.

Zinta began her acting career with Mani Ratnam’s 1998 Hindi film Dil Se and went on to establish herself through several successful Bollywood projects. She later stepped away from acting for eight years while focusing on her personal life, marriage and family.

The actress recently returned with Batwara 1947, a period drama directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and backed by Aamir Khan Productions. The film, starring Sunny Deol, arrived in theatres on August 14, 2026.
