Indian Cinema: The coming year brings with it some exciting films to look forward to. Here’s hoping that Bollywood can finally break its jinx at the box office this year. The South Cinema continues to enthral us and yes like me you too am sure are looking forward to some good Cinema from down South.
Here’s what 2023 has in store for the movie buff in you
More power to good cinema!
Pathaan
It’s Shahrukh Khan’s big mega release in a leading role after a gap of 3 years.
The Siddharth Anand directorial has already got a lot of attention with some drooling over the lead pair of Shahrukh and Deepika and others criticising it for hurting sentiments with its song ‘Besharam Rang’. The film has already created a lot of buzz and also stars John Abraham as the antagonist. Releasing on January 25, 2023. Let’s see if Pathaan makes a Pathaan size impact on the box-office.
Shah Rukh Khan will be seen in this film under the direction of South’s genius director Atlee, known for movies like Raja Rani, Theri and Mersal. The cast includes Sanya Malhotra, Nayanthara, and Vijay Sethupathi. It will be released pan India in June 2023 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
Jawan
The film is a desi entertainer for the masses. It will have a wider reach as it also has stars from the southern cinema.
Shahrukh has three films lined up in 2023 the odds of him doing well at the box office get that much higher.
Pushpa: The Rule
Pushpa: The Rule, starring Allu Arjun, Fahadh Faasil, and Rashmika Mandanna, is the sequel to the 2021 blockbuster. The Sukumar directoral Pushpa: The Rise is slated to release early next year.
The Telugu film will be released in Hindi as well as other south languages too.
Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani
Karan Johar is back in the director’s chair after 2016. Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani brings back the lead pair of Gully Boy, Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. The film also has senior thespian actors like Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan in notable roles.
Filmmaker Karan Johar returns as a director after Ae Dil Hai Mushkil with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.
Adipurush
The film based on Ramayana has already garnered a lot of attention, some of it was not positive attention. Nonetheless the film is one of the big budget epic films with an all star cast of Prabhas as Raghava (Lord Ram), Kriti Sanon as Janaki (Sita) , and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh (Ravana).
The teaser of course wasn’t very well received due to its poor VFX and CGI. Yet the buzz around the film remains due to curiosity and the star cast. It is slated for release in June 2023.
Salaar
After proving his mettle with the KGF films Prashanth Neel ventures into Telugu cinema with Salaar. Prabhas is the leading man in the film. The cast includes Prithviraj Sukumaran Jagapathi Babu as the antagonist. Shruti Haasan will be seen in the female lead.
Salaar will target a pan India audience and will havePrabhas playing a violent character.
Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2
The historical fictional drama Ponniyin Selvan: I which is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel and showcases the chola empire received much appreciation and acclaim.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and director Man Ratnam once again came together after hit films like Iruvar and Guru. Ponniyin Selvan 2, is the next part in this visual and cinematic treat.
Dunki
Shah Rukh Khan’s third film is his collaboration with director Rajkumar Hirani. The film stars Tapsee Pannu as the female lead and is based on the use of the illegal backdoor route called ‘Donkey Flight’ by Indians to immigrate to countries like Canada and the USA. It seems like another social drama on a light hearted note just like Hirani’s signature style of Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots.
Tapsee,Rajkumar Hirani and Shahrukh are working together for the first time.
Shahrukh and tran are also co-producing the film along with JIO Studio
Merry Christmas
The dark noir cinema is a must have on the Indian audiences’ platter. After Andhadhund the award winning director Shriram Raghavan is back with Merry Christmas in 2023, with Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi in the cast.
Dream Girl 2
Another gem hopefully from actor Ayushmann Khurrana’s brand of relatable cinema. Actor Ananya Panday will be seen as the female lead in Dream Girl 2. Directed by Raaj Shandilyaa who directed the successful original is also helming the project this time. The cast also includes Annu Kapoor, Manoj Joshi, and Vijay Raaz. There is speculation over Ananya Pandey pulling off a film like this alongside a cast of very talented and even seasoned actors. The wonderful subject and success of the first film surely has got people interested in this film too.
2023 surely brings a colourful and varied offering of films. The audience will be spoiled for choice. let’s hope the films are as interesting even in their content.
