From Journalism Dreams To Playback Singing: Shaan Opens Up About His Career

Playback singer Shaan has spoken about the different career paths he considered before establishing himself in the Indian music industry.

During his appearance on film trade analyst Komal Nahta’s podcast Game Changers: The Music Series, the singer discussed his childhood ambitions and his family’s influence on his career.

Shaan revealed that journalism and advertising once attracted him more than professional singing. He said these interests occupied much of his attention while he was growing up.

Although Shaan eventually built a successful career as a singer, he admitted that he did not initially regard himself as the strongest musical talent in his household. His father worked as both a composer and singer, while his grandfather, mother and sister had musical abilities.

This background made Shaan feel that he ranked below his relatives when it came to singing.

The singer said he never received formal training in music, although singing came naturally to him from an early age.

Shaan recalled receiving singing opportunities during his childhood because his parents already had connections within Mumbai’s music industry. He initially declined several such opportunities because he wanted to explore other interests.

The singer’s mother worked as a chorus singer, while his father maintained professional relationships with numerous musicians. Those connections eventually helped Shaan and his family enter the world of commercial jingles at a young age.

Shaan eventually accepted the opportunities that came his way and began developing a professional music career.

Reflecting on his abilities, Shaan suggested that musical talent develops through one’s surroundings and upbringing rather than simply passing through genetics. His story ultimately traces an unexpected transition from aspiring journalist and advertising enthusiast to one of India’s recognised playback voices, showing how early opportunities can redirect an individual’s ambitions.
