Maharashtra recorded 58.22% voter turnout till 5 pm on Wednesday in its 288 constituencies, while Jharkhand concluded its two-phase assembly elections with 67.59% turnout in the second phase and 66.65% in the first phase.
Maharashtra Sees Mixed Turnouts, Technical Glitches Reported
Gadchiroli recorded the highest turnout in Maharashtra at 69.63%, while Mumbai City saw the lowest at 49.07%. Other districts with strong participation included Kolhapur (67.97%) and Chandrapur (64.48%). In a tragic turn of events, Independent candidate Balasaheb Shinde from Beed died of a heart attack while approaching a polling station.
Technical issues were reported across several constituencies. EVMs malfunctioned in Kolhapur, Akola East, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, temporarily halting polling in affected areas.
Women Dominate Voting in Jharkhand
Women voters outnumbered men in 37 out of 43 seats in Jharkhand’s first phase and continued to show strong participation in the second phase. Maheshpur constituency saw the highest turnout at 79.40%, while Bokaro Urban and Dhanbad had the lowest, at 50.52% and 52.31%, respectively.
Peaceful Polling in Maoist-Affected Jharkhand
Despite its history of Maoist activity, Jharkhand witnessed peaceful elections. A booth in Jamtara achieved 100% turnout, with all 57 registered leprosy-affected voters casting their ballots. Over 2.26 crore voters participated in the elections.
The fate of 1,211 candidates, including leaders like Hemant Soren, Babulal Marandi, and Sudesh Mahato, is now sealed. Both states will eagerly await the results on November 23.
