Vizhinjam Port Emerges As Kerala’s Biggest Private Investment, Says Karan Adani At The Foundation Stone-Laying Ceremony For Phase-2

Vizhinjam International Seaport is the largest private investment ever committed in Kerala, with total investments set to touch ₹30,000 crore, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) Managing Director Karan Adani said on Saturday.

Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for Phase-2 of the project, Karan Adani said the port has already achieved global recognition within a short span of operations.

He noted that Vizhinjam became the fastest Indian port to handle one million TEUs within just 15 months of commencing commercial operations, firmly placing Kerala on the global shipping map.

Adani announced that Phase-2 of the port will involve an additional investment of ₹16,000 crore, taking the total committed investment to ₹30,000 crore. With the expansion, Vizhinjam’s capacity will increase from the current 1 million TEUs to 5.7 million TEUs by 2029.

He highlighted the strategic significance of Vizhinjam, stating that the port is expected to emerge as the largest transhipment hub in the Indian subcontinent and a globally competitive maritime centre.

He also described Vizhinjam as the most technologically advanced port in India and a model for future port development in the country.

Bipartisan Support and Cooperative Federalism

Adani underlined that large infrastructure projects of national importance are the result of sustained political support across governments and party lines. He credited former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy for awarding the project and providing its initial momentum, and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for carrying the vision forward with administrative clarity and long-term commitment.

He also acknowledged the support of Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, describing the bipartisan cooperation as a strong signal to investors.

Adani further termed Vizhinjam an example of cooperative federalism, noting the presence and support of Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and the Centre’s emphasis on port-led development.
