PIB Issues Alert Over Fake SMS Claiming Undelivered Packages

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a public advisory warning citizens about a fraudulent SMS claiming that a package has arrived at a warehouse and requires immediate address verification. The message urges recipients to update their details within 24 hours, failing which the package would allegedly be returned.

PIB clarified that the message is completely fake and has no connection with India Post or any authorised postal service.

Through its official fact-check handle, PIB stated that India Post never sends such messages. Further it clarified that customers are never asked to update their address details through links for the delivery of articles or parcels.

Authorities stressed that such messages are part of an ongoing scam designed to deceive people into sharing personal information.

The advisory was issued after several users reported receiving similar SMS messages. This raised concerns over the growing misuse of trusted government institutions for cyber fraud.

Rising Digital Fraud Concerns

Officials noted that scammers often use urgency and fear to manipulate recipients. Such tactics include threats of returned packages to prompt quick responses from unsuspecting individuals. By clicking on the links provided in these messages, individuals risk exposing sensitive personal and financial data.

PIB urged citizens to remain cautious and verify information through official channels before responding to any such communication.

The government has advised people not to click on suspicious links, respond to unknown messages, or share personal details such as addresses, bank information, or OTPs. Citizens were also encouraged to report such fraudulent messages to the relevant cybercrime authorities.

With the increasing use of digital communication for official services, PIB emphasised the importance of digital awareness and vigilance. Citizens were therefore reminded to rely only on verified sources and official websites for information related to postal services and deliveries.

The advisory serves as a reminder for citizens to remain alert against online scams. It also encourages people to spread awareness so that others do not fall victim to similar fraudulent attempts.
