Authorities will inaugurate Phase 2 of the Vizhinjam International Seaport today at 4 PM, marking a major step in India’s port-led development and maritime ambitions.
The inauguration will underscore the strategic importance of the deep-water port and strengthen India’s presence in global shipping and logistics networks.
Karan Adani will address the gathering at approximately 4:30 PM, highlighting the progress of the project and its long-term impact on trade, employment, and regional economic growth. Industry stakeholders, policymakers, and logistics experts are closely watching the event.
Developers are building the Vizhinjam International Seaport along India’s southern coastline as a major transhipment hub. It aims to reduce India’s dependence on foreign ports for the movement of cargo.
Its natural deep draft and proximity to key international shipping routes give it a strategic advantage. This positioning further enables the port to handle large container vessels with greater efficiency.
The commissioning of Phase 2 will substantially strengthen the port’s operational capabilities. It will, however, facilitate higher cargo volumes and lead to faster turnaround times for vessels.
The port is being developed with a focus on modern infrastructure, sustainability, and global competitiveness.
Developers have planned the Vizhinjam International Seaport with a capacity of 5 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), enabling it to handle substantial container traffic once fully operational. The project involves an overall investment of approximately ₹9,700 crore, reflecting its scale and long-term economic potential.
In terms of physical infrastructure, the port has a berth capacity of 2,000 metres. This allows it to accommodate multiple large vessels at the same time.
One of the major engineering highlights of the project is the 4-kilometre-long breakwater. It protects the port from rough sea conditions and ensures safe, uninterrupted operations throughout the year.
The development of the Vizhinjam port is expected to deliver substantial economic benefits. These include job creation, expansion of ancillary industries, and improved efficiency in logistics and cargo movement. It is also likely to strengthen India’s export-import ecosystem by offering faster and more cost-effective cargo movement.
With the inauguration of Phase 2, the project moves closer to realising its vision of becoming a world-class maritime hub.
The port is likely to significantly enhance India’s maritime trade capacity, support economic growth, and position the country as a key player in global shipping in the years ahead.
