Vice-Chancellor Rajiv Kumar: Tata Steel To Start Operations Of Kalinganagar Project

Tata Steel expects to finish the expansion of its Kalinganagar project by December of next year.

With an expenditure of Rs 23,500 crore, the business began the second phase of expansion of its Kalinganagar project in Odisha in November 2018 to increase production capacity to 8 million tonnes per annum from 3 MTPA.

“We are aiming to complete the project and make it operational by the end of December next year”, said Rajiv Kumar, vice-president of Operations at Tata Steel Kalinganagar (TSK).

He stated that the project involves raw material capacity expansion, upstream and mid-stream facilities, infrastructure, and downstream facilities, including a cold rolling mill complex, and that the new blast furnace being erected is India’s largest, with an inner volume of 5,870 cubic metres (cum).

The phase 2 extension will enhance flat steel production at the plant to fulfill the growing demands of the country’s automotive, general engineering, oil & gas, lifting & excavation, and other value-added segments, according to Kumar.

On the status of the expansion project, the vice president stated that around 80 percent of the work has been accomplished to date, with the remaining 20 percent moving nicely.

Along with its 8 MT annual production capacity at Kalinganagar, Tata Steel’s India operations will have a total output capacity of 26.6 MTPA.

The firm has a capacity of 12 MTPA at its Jamshedpur factory (including 1 MTPA bought from Usha Martin), 5.6 MTPA at Tata Steel Meramandali (formerly Tata Steel BSL) in Dhenkanal, and 1 MTPA at NINL in Kalinganagar.

When asked about the relevance of the expansion project, Kumar stated that with modern technology installed, the Kalinganagar factory will become one of the world’s lowest-cost steel manufacturers.
