US Fed Cuts Rates To Boost Global Economic Growth

The US Fed lowers rates boosting liquidity reducing borrowing costs stimulating investment and consumption strengthening global markets supporting emerging economies ensuring financial stability

US Fed Cuts Rates To Boost Global Economic Growth

The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday lowered the federal funds rate by 25 basis points, bringing it down from 3.75-4 per cent to 3.5-3.75 per cent, aiming to support growth amid moderately paced economic activity, rising unemployment, elevated inflation, and a clouded economic outlook. Rajeev Juneja, President of PHDCCI, emphasised that the move signals the Fed’s commitment to sustaining liquidity and reducing borrowing costs for households and businesses.

The Fed simultaneously adjusted the interest rate on reserve balances to 3.65 per cent and implemented targeted open market operations to maintain the federal funds rate within its new range.

In addition, the central bank will conduct standing overnight repurchase agreements at 3.75 per cent and standing overnight reverse repurchase operations at 3.5 per cent, each capped at $160 billion per counterparty per day, ensuring ample liquidity for financial institutions.

By lowering short-term funding costs, the Fed intends to encourage businesses to expand investment and households to increase consumption, thereby stimulating economic activity. The central bank also signalled readiness to purchase short-term Treasury securities if necessary, expanding its holdings of Treasuries to maintain an adequate reserve buffer and reinforce market stability.

“Lowering rates and easing liquidity conditions will support global financial stability and improve access to affordable credit,” said Dr Ranjeet Mehta, CEO and Secretary General of PHDCCI. He noted that emerging markets, including India, stand to benefit from the spillover effects of this expansionary policy.

Monetary Policy Boosts Global Markets

Analysts highlight that the rate cut reflects a cautious yet proactive Fed approach. While inflation remains above target, the committee seeks to prevent economic slowdown from deepening and aims to balance growth with financial stability.

Juneja pointed out that the Fed’s decisions could enhance investor confidence and stabilise markets, particularly in sectors sensitive to credit availability.

The Fed’s expansionary stance demonstrates its intent to maintain a steady flow of credit, bolster corporate investment, and provide households with lower-cost borrowing opportunities.

By reducing the cost of capital and enhancing liquidity, the policy is expected to accelerate economic activity, stimulate demand, and foster a positive business climate.

Looking ahead, the Fed will continue monitoring macroeconomic indicators closely and adjust its monetary policy as required, aiming to maintain stability while promoting growth.

Stakeholders, especially in global markets, will watch the central bank’s future moves, anticipating further supportive measures to sustain economic momentum and enhance financial confidence.
