Indian equity benchmarks extended their losing streak for the fifth consecutive week as rising crude oil prices and concerns over global interest rates weighed on investor sentiment.
The Nifty declined 2.09% during the week and fell 0.34% on Friday to close at 23,398. The Sensex dropped 120 points, or 0.16%, to end at 74,781, while it declined 2.27% over the week.
Analysts said global macroeconomic developments continued to pressure domestic equities.
A firmer US inflation outlook and rising Treasury yields, with the 10-year US yield nearing 5%, strengthened expectations of higher interest rates for longer and tighter global financial conditions.
The sell-off remained broad-based, with most major sectors ending lower. The Nifty Realty index fell 6.54% during the week, while the Nifty IT index declined around 5.78%.
Indian equities witnessed sharp volatility following the introduction of the new closing auction session, particularly on derivatives expiry days.
Crude oil emerged as a major pressure point for domestic markets as tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz intensified and Iran-aligned Houthi forces threatened oil shipments from the Red Sea region.
WTI crude rose more than 9.5% to above $104 a barrel, while Brent crude gained over 8.5% during the week.
Analysts said higher oil prices could increase India’s inflation and external-sector risks, raise input costs and pressure corporate margins while reinforcing expectations of prolonged high global interest rates.
The broader market remained weak. The Nifty Midcap100 declined 1.40%, while the Nifty Smallcap100 fell 0.94% during the week.
Nifty support stands at 23,300, with resistance at 23,500-23,600. Bank Nifty support is at 56,200-56,000, while 56,700-56,800 remains resistance.
FIIs sold ₹1,795.19 crore, while DIIs bought ₹6,419.46 crore. Oil prices, Middle East tensions and US rate expectations remain key market drivers.
