Indian stock markets ended another unsettled week on Friday, with the Nifty extending its decline to a fourth straight week as rising crude oil prices and heightened tensions between the US and Iran weighed on investor sentiment.

The Nifty closed at 23,897.70 on Friday, up 0.10 per cent for the day.

Despite the modest recovery, the index lost around 1.2 per cent during the week and remained below key moving averages, pointing to continued weakness in the near term.

The Sensex recovered on Friday, gaining 362.57 points, or 0.48 per cent, to finish at 76,515.43. It nevertheless ended the week nearly 1 per cent lower.

Oil prices emerged as a major concern for investors. Brent crude climbed more than 8 per cent during the week, while WTI crude rose over 9 per cent.

Renewed US-Iran hostilities and concerns about potential disruption near the Strait of Hormuz pushed energy prices higher.

The increase in crude prices came despite positive domestic economic signals. India’s economy expanded 7.8 per cent in the first quarter of FY27, while robust GST collections indicated continued economic activity.

Investors, however, remained concerned that expensive oil could increase inflationary pressures, widen the current account deficit and affect corporate earnings.

Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth around Rs 5,600 crore during the week. Domestic institutional investors provided a strong counterbalance, recording purchases of nearly Rs 18,560 crore.

For September so far, FIIs remained net buyers of around Rs 2,374 crore, while DIIs recorded net purchases of about Rs 18,568 crore.

Markets will now focus on upcoming US inflation data for further cues on global risk sentiment and monetary policy expectations.
