Indian equity markets will remain closed on Friday, October 2, for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, giving investors a three-day break from domestic stock market trading.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) will suspend trading across the equity, derivatives and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments.

Normal trading will resume on Monday, October 5.

According to the official market holiday calendar, exchanges have two scheduled holidays in October. The second is October 20 for Dussehra. Other scheduled holidays in 2026 include Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10, Prakash Gurpurb on November 24 and Christmas on December 25.

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will remain closed during both its morning and evening sessions on Friday.

The holiday follows another weak session for Indian equities, with benchmark indices falling for a fourth consecutive day on Thursday.

Continued foreign fund outflows, higher bond yields and rising crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment.

The Sensex declined 570.59 points, or 0.79 per cent, to end at 71,909.70. The index fell as much as 1,187.41 points, or 1.63 per cent, during the session before recovering some ground. The Nifty dropped 198.50 points, or 0.88 per cent, to close at 22,421.95.

Market experts said the broader trend remained weak, although oversold technical indicators could provide scope for a short-term recovery.

Investors will assess whether any rebound attracts sustained buying when trading resumes on Monday.
