Sensex and Nifty closed sharply lower on Friday after intense late-session selling rattled Dalal Street amid uncertainty surrounding possible developments between the United States and Iran.

Investor sentiment weakened sharply amid uncertainty surrounding a possible understanding between the United States and Iran, triggering widespread profit booking across major sectors.

The BSE Sensex settled at 74,775.74, declining 1,092.06 points or 1.44 per cent. The NSE Nifty ended at 23,547.75, shedding 359.40 points or 1.50 per cent.

Markets fluctuated sharply throughout the trading session before heavy selling pressure accelerated during the final trading hour.

The Nifty touched an intra-day high of 24,002.80 before slipping to a low of 23,484.75. Similarly, the Sensex climbed to 76,220.02 during the day but later dropped steeply to an intra-day low of 74,589.11.

Technical analysts stated that a sustained fall below the crucial 23,500 level may weaken the Nifty’s near-term structure further.

Experts projected additional downside pressure towards the 23,300–23,200 zone if selling momentum continues.

Analysts also identified the 23,750–23,800 range as immediate resistance, followed by the stronger 24,000 barrier.

Broader markets also witnessed weakness. The Nifty MidCap 100 index declined 1.33 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index slipped 0.85 per cent.

Heavyweight counters dragged benchmark indices lower. Reliance Industries fell by over 2.18 per cent, while ITC declined by 1.71 per cent.

Technology shares remained comparatively resilient. The Nifty IT index gained more than 0.60 per cent, supported by optimism surrounding overnight gains in US technology stocks and rupee weakness, benefiting export-oriented firms.

Analysts additionally linked fragile sentiment to IMD monsoon forecasts projecting rainfall at 90 per cent of the long-period average.
