Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty declined for the fourth day in a row on Wednesday, amid profit-taking by investors and negative Asian markets trend.
The 30-share BSE Sensex dipped 667.55 points, or 0.89 percent to 74,502.90. The NSE Nifty sank 183.45 points, or 0.80 percent to 22,704.70.
ICICI Prudential, Interglobe Aviation, IRCTC, HDFC Life Insurance, Varun Beverages, Dabur India, Info Edge (India), SBI Life Insurance, and Godrej Consumer were the top laggards.
Among the gainers were Samvardhana Motherson, Hindalco, Torrent Pharma, Power Grid Corp, Divi’s Labs, Trent, Bharat Electronics, and Nestle India.
In Asian markets, Shanghai closed higher, while Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan, Tokyo, Malaysia, and Hong Kong ended lower.
On Tuesday, US markets closed on a mixed note.
European stocks were trading lower.
Brent crude gained 0.88 percent to $84.94 per barrel.
According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought securities worth Rs 65.57 crore on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the Sensex dropped 220.05 points or 0.29 percent to 75,170.45, while the Nifty lost 44.30 points or 0.19 percent to 22,888.15.
