Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized the importance of securing a trade agreement with India that benefits the entire United Kingdom during a meeting with his ministers on Tuesday. He discussed ongoing negotiations for a free trade deal and reaffirmed his commitment to an approach that works for all regions of the UK. Sunak’s remarks came ahead of his trip to the G20 summit in India later this week.

India views a trade deal with Britain as crucial for expanding its export opportunities, while the UK, eager to explore new trade avenues after Brexit, anticipates broader access for its products such as whisky, premium cars, and legal services.
However, several key issues remain unresolved, including intellectual property rights, rules of origin, and an investment treaty. Campaigners have urged Britain to avoid demanding provisions that could negatively impact India’s generic drugs industry and lead to higher product costs.

Last month, India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, expressed optimism about concluding negotiations for a free trade agreement with the UK by the end of the year. “A free trade agreement with the UK is very close to realization,” she stated.
