PM Modi To Inaugurate ₹8,900 Crore Vizhinjam Port, India’s First Transhipment Hub

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the ₹8,900 crore Vizhinjam International Seaport on May 2. The port is India’s first dedicated deepwater container transhipment hub. It marks a major step in boosting the country’s maritime and trade infrastructure.

The government called the project a key part of the “Viksit Bharat” vision. The seaport lies close to one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. Its natural draft is nearly 20 metres. This allows it to handle large container vessels with ease.

Officials said the port will cut India’s reliance on foreign ports for cargo transhipment. It will also improve logistics, reduce costs, and strengthen India’s role in global trade.

The Kerala government launched the project under the landlord model. It follows a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) approach. Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited is the private partner and concessionaire. The company began construction on December 5, 2015.

Kerala Ports Minister VN Vasavan said the port is a high-priority national project. He added that the state is proud to host such a vital infrastructure. PM Modi will dedicate the port to the nation at 11:00 AM on May 2.

Adani’s Experience Made The Difference

AS Suresh Babu, former MD and CEO of Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited, praised Adani. He said only Adani could handle the tough local and technical conditions. “This is a project for India. Adani knows the region and has the expertise,” Babu said.

The port faced many hurdles over the years. Adani’s deep understanding of India and Kerala helped it move forward. The firm also brought key know-how in port development.

The Vizhinjam Port is set to create jobs and attract investment. It will reduce turnaround time for cargo and enhance shipping efficiency.

India’s maritime sector will gain a major edge with this launch. The port will also act as a gateway for trade across the Indian Ocean. With this project, India moves closer to becoming a logistics hub in Asia.
