The Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) has provided ₹2 lakh life insurance coverage to over 21 crore beneficiaries, the Finance Ministry announced on Saturday. This initiative ensures financial security for families during uncertain times.
In a social media post on X, the ministry stated that cumulative enrolments under PMJJBY have reached 21.67 crore. The scheme has processed 860,575 claims worth ₹17,211.50 crore as of October 20, 2024.
PMJJBY is a renewable, one-year life insurance plan that offers ₹2 lakh coverage against a premium of ₹436 annually. It covers individuals aged 18-50 with a bank or post office account. Beneficiaries who enroll before 50 can continue coverage until 55 by paying the yearly premium.
The scheme covers death due to any reason, providing essential financial security to beneficiaries’ families. It has become a vital tool for promoting financial resilience.
The Finance Ministry also shared updates on the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). PMSBY has enrolled 47.59 crore individuals for ₹2 lakh accident insurance coverage. Of the 193,964 claims filed, 147,641 have been disbursed.
Under PMJDY, account numbers have surged to 53.13 crore, with women holding 55.6% of accounts and 66.6% located in rural and semi-urban areas. Total deposits under Jan Dhan accounts now stand at ₹2,31,236 crore, reflecting a 15-fold rise since the scheme’s launch.
These initiatives highlight the government’s commitment to ensuring financial security through government insurance schemes.
