Indian equity benchmarks surrendered their early gains on Tuesday as pressure on IT and financial stocks pushed the market lower.
The BSE Sensex lost 329.91 points, or 0.44 per cent, to finish at 74,529.08, while the NSE Nifty declined 85.30 points, or 0.36 per cent, to settle at 23,329.
The fall brought the Nifty’s four-session advance to an end as investors reduced positions in several heavyweight sectors.
Information technology shares faced notable selling pressure during the session, with major companies including TCS, Infosys and HCL Technologies coming under pressure.
Financial stocks also contributed to the weakness, while Bajaj Finserv and Bajaj Finance featured among the prominent decliners.
Trent, Tata Consumer Products and TCS were among the Nifty constituents that ended the session lower.
The wider market also recorded modest losses, although the decline remained limited compared with the pressure seen in some large-cap sectors.
The Nifty MidCap index slipped 0.08 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index declined 0.23 per cent.
Sectoral performance remained mixed as investors shifted towards selected pockets of the market.
The Nifty Media, Nifty Realty and Nifty Metal indices recorded gains and helped cushion the impact of losses elsewhere.
Market participants continued to rotate investments across sectors, reducing exposure to weaker segments while seeking opportunities in areas that showed relative strength.
Market analysts identified 23,400–23,500 as the immediate resistance zone for the Nifty.
On the downside, 23,300 remains an important support level, followed by 23,200. A sustained move below 23,300 could increase selling pressure and bring the lower support zone into focus.
