Metro Commuters Embrace Digital Payments; Nagpur Metro Leads With 41% Adoption

Nagpur Metro, celebrating its second anniversary in December 2024, continues to experience steady growth. It has average daily ridership surpassing 1 lakh since August 2023. This impressive performance highlights the system’s growing popularity as a preferred mode of transport for the city’s commuters.

Metro Commuters Prefer Digital Payments

Digital payment adoption has been a key trend for Nagpur Metro. According to Mahametro, 41% of passengers opted for digital payment methods for their journeys up until March 2024.

In the 2023-24 fiscal year, the metro recorded over 25.5 million passengers, generating ₹41.87 crore in fare box revenue. Of this, more than ₹17 crore came from digital payment platforms such as UPI, Point of Sale (POS) systems, and the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC).

This represents a 5% increase in passenger journeys and a remarkable 54% rise in fare box revenue compared to the previous fiscal year, signalling growing confidence in the system and its digital infrastructure.

Nagpur Metro Outperforms Competitors

When compared to other metro systems in India, Nagpur Metro has outperformed the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, which began operations in November 2023. During the same period, Navi Mumbai Metro recorded a ridership of 1.65 million passengers, with 35% of transactions conducted digitally, generating ₹4.42 crore in revenue.

Pune Metro Leads In Digital Transactions

While Nagpur Metro’s digital payment adoption has been notable, Pune Metro continues to lead in this area, with 75% of daily transactions being completed digitally. In some instances, this figure has even reached as high as 82%.

Ongoing Growth And Future Prospects

Mahametro sources indicated that the digital payment percentage for Nagpur Metro could have already exceeded 50% as of 2024, further reflecting the system’s evolution. The consistent rise in ridership and the growing shift towards digital payments underscore Nagpur Metro’s success in catering to the city’s transportation needs while promoting seamless, tech-driven commuter experiences.
