Indian equity markets closed marginally lower on Wednesday as investors dialled down risk ahead of the Christmas holiday, allowing sectoral selling and low volumes to dictate the session’s tone.
Weakness in oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, and information technology stocks outweighed selective buying, keeping benchmark indices firmly under pressure.
The BSE Sensex ended the day at 85,408.70, shedding 116.14 points, or 0.14 per cent. The NSE Nifty followed a similar trajectory, slipping 35.05 points, or 0.13 per cent, to settle at 26,142.10.
Traders largely stayed on the sidelines, preferring capital preservation over aggressive bets in a holiday-shortened week.
Market participants observed that the Nifty drifted toward the 26,100-26,130 support zone, where limited buying interest was evident.
However, the index failed to gather enough momentum to stage a meaningful rebound. Analysts warned that unless the Nifty decisively regains the 26,200 mark, near-term sentiment will remain guarded, with downside risks extending toward 26,100 and below.
Stock-specific action defined the session. On the BSE, Trent, UltraTech Cement, and Maruti Suzuki led the gainers, supported by selective accumulation in consumer-facing and infrastructure-linked counters.
On the other hand, losses in Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle segment, Sun Pharma, and Asian Paints dragged the index lower and capped any potential upside.

On the NSE, Trent continued its strong run alongside Shriram Finance and Apollo Hospitals, which closed higher on sustained investor interest.
Meanwhile, selling pressure in IndiGo and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories weighed heavily on broader sentiment and contributed to the subdued close.
The broader market painted a mixed picture. The Nifty SmallCap 100 index rose 0.28 per cent, reflecting continued appetite for selective growth names.
In contrast, the Nifty MidCap 100 slipped 0.60 per cent, indicating profit-taking in mid-sized stocks after recent gains.
Sectorally, Nifty Oil and Gas emerged as the weakest performer, falling 0.76 per cent amid volatility in global energy cues.
Nifty Metal and Pharma indices also declined 0.51 per cent each, reinforcing the defensive undertone.
On the positive side, Nifty Media climbed 0.44 per cent, while Realty and select metal stocks managed modest gains, offering pockets of resilience.
Market experts said the session reflected a classic pre-holiday pattern, marked by thin volumes, cautious positioning, and limited directional conviction.
With no major domestic triggers on the horizon, traders focused on stock-specific developments rather than broad-based trends.
Looking ahead, analysts expect market activity to remain muted in the near term.
Investors will closely monitor global cues and trade-related developments for fresh signals, even as domestic markets brace for a low-volatility phase before the year-end.
