Indian stock markets finished the final trading day of FY26 in the red, as escalating tensions in West Asia dampened investor confidence and led to heavy selling across sectors. Concerns over slowing global growth and rising inflation further pressured market sentiment.
The Nifty 50 dropped 2.14 per cent, losing 488.20 points to close at 22,331.40. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex declined 2.22 per cent, shedding 1,635.67 points to end the session at 71,947.55.
Analysts noted that the Nifty slipping below the key 22,500 support mark indicates continued bearish momentum. The 22,500–22,600 band is now likely to act as a resistance zone, where selling activity has consistently emerged.
Financial stocks bore the brunt of the sell-off, with key laggards on the Nifty including Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance, and State Bank of India.
Within the Sensex pack, only Tech Mahindra and Power Grid Corporation of India managed to register gains. Other stocks such as IndiGo, Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank ended among the biggest losers.
Broad-Based Selling Across Segments
The downturn was not confined to large-cap stocks, as broader markets also witnessed significant declines. The Nifty MidCap index fell 2.68 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index slipped 2.66 per cent, reflecting widespread selling pressure.
Banking and financial sector indices—including Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Bank, and Nifty Financial Services—emerged as the worst-performing segments. However, metal and oil & gas stocks showed relatively smaller losses, offering limited support.
Market participants attributed the decline to heightened geopolitical uncertainty, particularly involving Iran, possible Houthi escalation, and an increased military presence by the United States in the region.
These developments have intensified fears of supply disruptions and persistently high energy prices, prompting investors to adopt a cautious, risk-off stance and leading to a weak close for Indian markets in FY26.
