Maha Kumbh 2025

India has seen a 21.4% rise in inbound spiritual travel, according to Atlys, a leading visa processing platform. This growth is mainly driven by major religious events, such as the Maha Kumbh, and other large festivals. Nearly 48% of all spiritual travel visa applications are linked to these significant events and pilgrimages. The Maha Kumbh, which is currently taking place, is one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. It is expected to draw an estimated 42 million pilgrims.

Held once every 144 years, the Maha Kumbh attracts both domestic and international visitors. It offers them a chance to connect with India’s deep spiritual heritage. Countries like the US and the UK have seen a marked increase in spiritual tourists. People from these nations seek authentic, transformative experiences. Notably, women make up 66% of millennial spiritual travelers, driving the shift toward more meaningful vacations. The younger generation is increasingly opting for spiritual journeys instead of traditional tourism.

Top Destinations And Infrastructure Upgrades

Popular spiritual destinations like Varanasi and Rishikesh continue to draw millions of foreign visitors each year. Tourists come to meditate by the Ganges, watch the evening aarti, and explore the historic ghats.

To accommodate the rising number of spiritual tourists, authorities have upgraded infrastructure at major pilgrimage sites. These improvements make the experience more comfortable and accessible, reinforcing India’s commitment to welcoming global spiritual seekers.

With events like the Maha Kumbh drawing record numbers, India is becoming a top spiritual tourism destination. Enhanced infrastructure and changing travel trends ensure that India will continue to attract spiritual travelers for years to come.
