Lakshadweep Opens Investment Floodgates With ₹519 Crore Fisheries Push

Lakshadweep attracts major fisheries investments as policy reforms unlock tuna exports, sustainable growth, jobs, infrastructure and global market access

Lakshadweep Opens Investment Floodgates With ₹519 Crore Fisheries Push

Lakshadweep scripted a new chapter in its economic journey as the Union Territory hosted its first-ever investors’ meet, attracting proposed investments worth ₹519 crore in fisheries and aquaculture. The landmark event signalled the Centre’s intent to unlock the islands’ vast marine potential while positioning Lakshadweep as a strategic hub in India’s blue economy ambitions.

The Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying organised the meet in collaboration with the Lakshadweep administration. Senior policymakers, industry leaders, exporters, and entrepreneurs converged to explore opportunities in tuna fishing, aquaculture, value addition, and export-oriented marine industries.

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh underlined the policy reforms that now make Lakshadweep a more attractive destination for investment. He said the government has notified fishing rules for India’s Exclusive Economic Zone, allowing fishermen to legally operate with an authorised Access Pass. This reform enables Indian operators to harvest high-value tuna and other species and directly access international markets.

Singh further noted that fishery resources harvested from India’s EEZ will now carry the tag of “Indian Origin” under international law. This recognition strengthens India’s export credibility and simplifies compliance in the global seafood trade. He added that the High Seas Fishing Guidelines now grant Indian-flagged vessels clear legal rights to operate in these waters, removing long-standing regulatory ambiguities.

Calling Lakshadweep a sleeping giant of the fisheries sector, the minister urged investors to seize opportunities in high-demand species such as tuna. He stressed that sustainable harvesting, coupled with modern infrastructure, can generate employment while protecting fragile marine ecosystems.

 Islands Court Capital Sustainably

The meeting also featured an interactive session where investors raised operational challenges. They flagged gaps in logistics such as transportation to the mainland, cold storage facilities, ice plants, and chilled fish handling centres. Participants also pushed for value-added units for sashimi-grade tuna, fish oil refining facilities, skilled manpower development, and ornamental fish brood banks.

Minister of State S.P. Singh Baghel highlighted the stark gap between Lakshadweep’s current fish production of around 14,000 tonnes and its estimated potential of one lakh tonnes. He said the islands offer ideal conditions for premium-quality tuna fishing using pole-and-line and handline methods, practices globally recognised for their sustainability and low environmental impact.

Baghel urged exporters to diversify markets and fully leverage government welfare schemes to strengthen the fisheries value chain. He said strategic investments can transform Lakshadweep into a model of sustainable marine development while boosting India’s seafood exports.

The investors’ meet marked a decisive political signal that Lakshadweep stands ready to balance conservation with commerce, backed by policy clarity, export ambition, and a strong push for private participation.
