ISRO Satellite Captures Stunning Images Of Maha Kumbh Mela 2025

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released detailed radar images of the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

These high-resolution images, captured by the EOS-04 (RISAT-1A) radar imaging satellite, showcase the extensive infrastructure built for the event, including tent cities, roads, and pontoon bridges at the Sangam.

The images combine time-series data from 15 September 2023 (pre-event) and 29 December 2024 (infrastructure buildup), revealing the progressive development of the site.

The satellite, equipped with all-weather imaging capabilities, used advanced radar technology to capture clear visuals through cloud cover that has enveloped Prayagraj.

Taking to X, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri posted, “The Indian Space Research Organisation (@isro) has released stunning images of the Maha Kumbh Mela as seen from space.”

ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) in Hyderabad used advanced radar technology to capture clear images of Prayagraj despite cloud cover.

Dr Prakash Chauhan, Director of the NRSC, noted, “The radarsat was used as it could image the region through the cloud band that enveloped Prayagraj.”

The Uttar Pradesh administration is using these satellite images to assist in disaster management and crowd control, ensuring the safety of millions of devotees attending the event.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh praised the use of advanced technology in the management of the massive gathering.

“These advanced technologies represent a paradigm shift in managing large-scale religious gatherings. The Mahakumbh Mela stands as a shining example of how technology and tradition can come together to create a cleaner, healthier future for all,” he further asserted.

Maha Kumbh Mela 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is one of the largest spiritual gatherings globally, attracting over 450 million devotees.

The event commenced on 10 January 2025, and will continue until 26 February.

On Makar Sankranti alone, over 1.60 crore devotees took a holy dip at the Sangam.

The satellite images also document the event’s evolution, from the pre-event stage in April 2024 to the ongoing crowds and infrastructure developments in January 2025.
