India’s personal computer (PC) market saw a 3.8% year-on-year (YoY) growth in 2024, reaching 14.4 million units, as demand for gaming and AI-powered PCs surged, according to market research firm IDC.
Despite currency fluctuations that may push up device costs, the market will likely maintain low single-digit growth in 2025, said Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President for Devices Research at IDC India, South Asia, and ANZ.
Small and medium businesses (SMBs) and price-sensitive consumers could feel the impact of a weaker rupee, but the sector continues to expand steadily.
Gaming and AI-driven computers have been key drivers of growth in the Indian consumer PC segment.
HP led the market with a 30.1% share in 2024 and 30% in the December quarter, despite minor annual and quarterly declines of 1% and 1.8%, respectively, IDC reported.
According to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker report, Lenovo and Dell followed, securing 17.2% and 16.1% of the market, with YoY growth of 7.3% and 8.1%, respectively.
International Data Corporation (IDC) in a statement noted, “The traditional PC market (inclusive of desktops, notebooks, and workstations) shipped 14.4 million units in 2024, up 3.8 percent YoY. Breaking it down by category, shipments of notebooks and desktops grew 4.5 percent YoY and 1.8 percent YoY, respectively, while workstation shipments recorded the highest growth at 10.9 percent.”
The consumer PC segment grew 2.6% YoY in 2024 and 2.2% in the December quarter, primarily driven by strong online sales.
Bharath Shenoy, Research Manager at IDC India and South Asia stated, “The demand for gaming notebooks has been robust, with double-digit growth in FY24. Also, since mid-2024, shipments of AI-powered notebooks increased substantially as the demand for relatively lower-end AI PCs powered by Intel Core Ultra processors and AMD Ryzen AI processors have seen a steady increase.”
Premium notebooks priced above $1,000 recorded a 13.8% YoY increase.
On the commercial side, PC shipments grew 5.1% YoY in FY24 and surged 11.1% in the December quarter.
Demand from enterprises and government agencies, including purchases through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), drove a 10.6% YoY increase in both segments.
“The commercial PC market in India is on the upswing, driven by healthy refresh order books and momentum in public sector buying. The industry is expecting replacement demand to start coming in from this year, as 2020-21 purchases reach 3-4 years in age,” Singh asserted.
The total market expanded by 6.9% YoY in Q4 2024, with notebook shipments growing by 9.6%.
