On Tuesday, Samir V Kamat, the Chairperson of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), revealed that India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is generating significant interest worldwide, with several countries eager to acquire the advanced weapon system.
According to Kamat, Indonesia has expressed interest in the missile, along with other nations in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. However, he refrained from providing specific details about ongoing discussions due to their sensitive nature.
He mentioned, “Indonesia is interested…There are other countries also who have shown interest in Brahmos…Some countries in the Middle East and some other countries in Southeast Asia.”
India’s Growing Defence Exports
While the discussions surrounding the BrahMos missile are still at an early stage, Kamat expressed confidence that India’s defense exports will continue to grow significantly in the coming years. He predicted that India’s exports would double or even triple within the next five years, with DRDO playing a crucial role in achieving these targets.
“By this year, we expect Rs 26,000 crores. By next year, Rs 30,000 crores. By 2028-29, Rs 50,000 crores. By 2035, Rs 1 lakh crore. The Defence Minister has set this target, and we are fully committed to achieving it,” he said.
BrahMos: A Global Success
DRDO and the Russian Federation’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya jointly developed the BrahMos missile. Known for its exceptional speed and precision, BrahMos has enhanced India’s deterrence capabilities.
Since its induction into the Indian Army in 2007, BrahMos has played a key role in bolstering India’s defense strength. The Indian Army has already integrated the missile into several regiments.
BrahMos Deal With Indonesia In Progress
In addition to Indonesia’s interest, discussions are underway for a possible BrahMos missile deal with the Southeast Asian nation. India and Indonesia have agreed to begin negotiations, with Indonesian teams set to visit India.
Russia’s approval is essential due to the missile’s Russian components.
BrahMos’ Success In Global Market
India has already made significant progress in exporting the BrahMos missile. The Philippines, for instance, placed an order worth over USD 335 million a few years ago.
Other nations, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and several countries in the Middle East, have also expressed interest in acquiring the India-Russia joint venture missile system.
