Indian Navy Completes MIGM Validation Trial; Enhances Naval Defence Capabilities

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have completed the validation trial of the Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM), marking a significant leap in strengthening India’s naval defence capabilities.

This milestone brings India closer to achieving a superior strategic edge in undersea warfare.

What Is The Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM)?

The MIGM is an advanced underwater naval mine developed by DRDO to counter the growing threat of modern stealth ships and submarines.

Designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s tactical response, the mine is capable of detecting various marine vessel signatures, including acoustic, magnetic, and pressure signatures.

These capabilities are vital for tracking and targeting ships, especially those designed with stealth technology to evade detection.

Equipped with multiple sensors, the MIGM collects and processes these different signatures. The mine features an integrated electronics setup, including Data Acquisition Electronics powered by an ARM Processor.

This allows the system to record and analyse data in real-time, providing precise commands that enable the mine to effectively respond to the movement of enemy vessels.

Tactical Advantage For The Indian Navy

The MIGM’s versatility is one of its key features. The Indian Navy can deploy it from multiple platforms, including ships, submarines, and Cooperative Undersea Operating Platforms (COOPs).

This flexibility allows the Indian Navy to use the mine in a wide range of operational settings, significantly enhancing the reach and effectiveness of undersea defence strategies.

The ability to detect a variety of vessel signatures provides the Navy with a substantial tactical advantage, especially in situations involving stealth or low-visibility vessels.

With this technology, India is better equipped to counter modern threats and maintain an edge in undersea warfare.

Indian Navy’s Strategic Step Towards Stronger Defence

The successful validation trial of the MIGM reflects India’s ongoing efforts to enhance its naval strength.

As security challenges in the Indian Ocean region become more complex, maintaining dominance in undersea warfare is increasingly critical.

The MIGM will serve as a powerful tool for the Indian Navy, ensuring the protection of national interests in these crucial waters.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh praised the efforts of DRDO, the Indian Navy, and industry partners, emphasising that the MIGM will further boost the Indian Navy’s capabilities in undersea warfare.

With partners such as Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam, and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad, leading the production of the MIGM, India continues to invest in cutting-edge defence technologies to stay ahead of emerging threats in the naval domain.
