India To Lead In Global 6G Development With New Chennai Centre

Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary (Telecom), expects India to play a key role in developing global 6G standards and infrastructure.

India is likely to play a pivotal role in the development of global 6G standards and infrastructure, according to Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary (Telecom).

Speaking at the inauguration of a new Centre of Excellence on 6G at IITM Research Park in Chennai, Dr. Mittal highlighted the country’s ambitious plans under the ‘Bharat 6G Vision’ initiative.

Dr. Mittal emphasized that the newly inaugurated Centre of Excellence aligns with the ‘Bharat 6G Vision’ document unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March of the previous year.

This vision outlines India’s goal to be a leading contributor in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030.

“The initiative aims to create a cohesive and coordinated effort to advance 6G technology,” Dr. Mittal said.

He further emphasized that the team leverages their collective expertise and resources to ensure all projects benefit, positioning India at the forefront of this technological leap.

A Hub For Innovation

The Centre of Excellence, a sub-centre of Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCoE)-India, will spearhead the development of 6G technology, which promises unprecedented speeds, ultra-low latency, and enhanced connectivity.

The facility will serve as a hub for innovation, bringing together academic and industry experts to drive cutting-edge projects and develop new 6G applications and services.

The new centre will also facilitate integration with the existing 5G Test Bed at IIT Madras.

Inaugurated by PM Modi in May 2022, this test bed was developed through a collaborative project involving eight institutes and funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Meanwhile, it extensively tests new 5G products and use cases.

Dr. Mittal revealed that the DoT is investing in two next-generation testbeds to further advance 6G research.

Additionally, under the Bharat 6G Vision, the DoT is currently evaluating 470 proposals focused on accelerating research in the 6G ecosystem.
