India recorded 19.50 lakh electric vehicle (EV) sales in 2024, accounting for 7.44% of total vehicle sales, according to data from the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
The government expects this upward trend in EV adoption to continue.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma informed that 19,50,490 out of the 2,62,07,453 vehicles registered on the e-Vahan portal in 2024 were electric vehicles.
EV registrations have increased significantly since 2014-15, with the share rising from 0.01% in financial year 2014-15 to 7.31% in financial year 2024-25, as per the e-Vahan portal.
“Increasing trend in EV penetration is expected to continue,” the minister said.
The Centre has been consistently supporting the establishment of EV charging infrastructure.
Under the FAME-II scheme, the government allocated ₹839 crore for setting up electric vehicle public charging stations (EVPCS).
Similarly, the PM E-DRIVE scheme received an allocation of ₹2,000 crore for expanding charging infrastructure.
The Ministry of Power (MoP) issued the ‘Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure-2024’ on 17 September 2024.
These guidelines outline the standards and protocols for setting up a national EV charging network.
MoP also released ‘Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Battery Swapping and Charging Stations’ on 10 January 2025.
These aim to strengthen the EV charging network and improve accessibility for EV owners.
