India’s metro network has reached a significant milestone by expanding with a total length of 1,000 kilometres, making it the third-largest metro system in the world. This achievement underscores the government’s continuous efforts to enhance urban mobility and connectivity.
The accomplishment follows the announcement of several new metro projects and the Namo Bharat initiative for Delhi, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India’s metro journey began in 2002 with the launch of Delhi’s modern metro, under the leadership of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Since then, the metro network has seen remarkable growth, especially under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi since 2014. Today, the metro network spans across the nation, reflecting unprecedented expansion and development.
In the past ten years, India’s metro network has expanded threefold, adding 1,000 kilometres to its total length. The number of states with metro services has grown from five to eleven, and the number of cities benefiting from metro connectivity has surged from five to 23.
The rise in ridership has been equally impressive. Daily metro passengers have increased from 28 lakh in 2014 to over one crore, a 2.5-fold rise. Additionally, the total distance travelled by metro trains has tripled, growing from 86,000 kilometres to 2.75 lakh kilometres.
Moreover, Prime Minister Modi’s vision for urban transport centres on providing seamless, affordable, and modern connectivity. This vision aims to enhance the ease of travel and improve the quality of life for millions of citizens. The expansion of metro services plays a crucial role in achieving this objective, offering urban residents a reliable and efficient mode of transportation.
In line with his vision, Prime Minister Modi recently inaugurated the 13-kilometre stretch of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor, built at a cost of Rs 4,600 crore. Spanning from Sahibabad RRTS Station to New Ashok Nagar RRTS Station, this new corridor will significantly boost regional connectivity between Delhi and Meerut, providing high-speed, comfortable travel options for millions.
Additionally, PM Modi inaugurated a 2.8-kilometer stretch of the Delhi Metro Phase-IV, connecting Janakpuri and Krishna Park. With an investment of Rs 1,200 crore, this marks the first operational segment of Delhi Metro Phase-IV. This new addition will greatly benefit residents of West Delhi, particularly in areas like Krishna Park, Vikaspuri, and Janakpuri.
Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for the 26.5-kilometer Rithala-Kundli section of Delhi Metro Phase-IV, which is estimated to cost Rs 6,230 crore. This new corridor will connect Rithala in Delhi to Nathupur (Kundli) in Haryana, enhancing connectivity between North-West Delhi and Haryana. Key areas such as Rohini, Bawana, Narela, and Kundli will benefit from this development.
