India’s job market continues to expand, with green jobs hiring surging 9% in the last three months, according to a new report released on Thursday.
The study by foundit (formerly Monster APAC & ME), a prominent jobs and talent platform, highlights the growing importance of green jobs, which have seen a remarkable 41% increase over the last two years. This growth is largely driven by expanding clean energy initiatives.
Green jobs, which focus on preserving or restoring the environment, are a standout feature of the current job market. Sectors like semiconductors, energy, and waste management are driving this growth, fueled by global efforts to reach net-zero emissions.
Bengaluru, Delhi, and Pune have become key hubs for green jobs, and experts project the demand for these roles will rise by another 11% in 2025, driven by advancements in renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), and green hydrogen projects.
In addition to green jobs, other sectors such as travel and tourism, retail, and automotive are also seeing significant growth in hiring, with many industries experiencing double-digit increases.
The report attributes this upward trend to strong economic conditions, evolving industry needs, and supportive government policies. Notably, government initiatives in digital skilling and startup growth are playing a critical role in creating a future-ready workforce.
Pranay Kale, Chief Revenue & Growth Officer of foundit, commented on the growing job market: “India’s job market continues to grow at a strong pace, with hiring surging across key industries. Sectors like travel, retail, and green jobs are seeing sustained momentum, reflecting business confidence and evolving industry priorities.”
The rise in green jobs is especially noteworthy, having grown by 41% in the last two years, driven by sustainability initiatives and clean energy investments.
Kale further explained that government policies, particularly provisions in the Union Budget, are accelerating this shift. These policies are specifically focused on renewable energy, electric vehicles, and sustainability-driven industries.
The report also revealed a 32% year-on-year increase in hiring for January 2025, signaling renewed confidence in the job market. Factors such as rising consumer demand, strategic incentives outlined in the Union Budget 2025, and an increased focus on sustainability are driving the surge.
Bengaluru leads the green job market, accounting for 23% of opportunities. Delhi NCR follows with 17%, while Pune and Mumbai each contribute 14%. Additionally, cities like Chennai, Jaipur, and Hyderabad are becoming significant players in the sector.
“As hiring expands beyond metro cities, Tier-2 hubs are emerging as key employment centers, reinforcing India’s transition to a future-ready, greener economy,” Kale said.
This trend highlights the growing importance of green jobs in India’s future workforce, reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable economic growth.
