Government to enable citizens to report social media companies for violating IT regulations

The government will aid citizens in filing FIRs against social media sites for violation of IT rules if they are harmed by unacceptable content such as deep fakes.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, stated that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) will create a portal where users may report IT rule violations using social media platforms.

“Meity will assist users to very easily notify it about violation of IT rules and assist them in filing FIRs”, Chandrasekhar continued.

He was addressing the media following a meeting with a social media site. “From today onwards there is zero tolerance for violation of IT rules”, Chandrasekhar added.

“The FIR will be filed against the intermediary and if they reveal the content originated, the FIR will be filed against the entity that has posted the content”, Chandrasekhar noted.

Chandrasekhar went on to say that social media platforms have been given seven days to conform their terms of service with IT rules.
