The Narendra Modi government’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has seen remarkable growth in LPG refills over the past five years, dispelling opposition claims that beneficiaries are abandoning the scheme and reverting to firewood for cooking.
As of March 1, 2025, PMUY has provided 10.33 crore LPG connections across India, with figures showing a significant increase in the number of refills.
The total number of refills delivered in the current financial year (FY) till February 2025 reached 41.95 crore, compared to 39.38 crore in FY 2023-24.
This is a substantial jump from the 22.80 crore refills delivered in 2019-20, reflecting a nearly 100% increase in five years.
The per capita consumption of LPG among PMUY beneficiaries has also seen a sharp rise, further underscoring the success of the scheme.
In FY 2021-22, the per capita consumption was 3.68 cylinders annually, which rose to 3.95 in FY 2023-24. By FY 2024-25, the number reached 4.43 cylinders per person annually.
This increase highlights the growing reliance on LPG by the beneficiaries, thanks to the government’s efforts to improve access to cooking gas.
Since its launch in May 2016, PMUY has aimed to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women in poor households.
The government’s efforts, including the introduction of Ujjwala 2.0 in 2021, have helped increase the number of beneficiaries.
The government achieved Ujjwala 2.0’s target of 1 crore additional connections in January 2022 and added 60 lakh more connections by December 2022.
It also approved the release of 75 lakh more connections for FY 2023-24 to 2025-26, which was achieved by July 2024.
These steps reflect the government’s commitment to providing cleaner and safer cooking solutions to rural India.
The government has delivered 234.02 crore LPG refills to PMUY beneficiaries, delivering approximately 12.6 lakh refills daily in FY 2024-25 (till February).
This is a testament to the successful implementation of the PMUY and its impact on improving the living standards of rural households.
PMUY’s success is evident in the increased number of refills and the rise in per capita consumption, disproving the opposition’s claims.
The government’s initiatives continue to improve access to cooking gas, transforming the lives of millions of families, particularly women, by ensuring cleaner and healthier cooking alternatives.
