Government Extends GSTR-3B Filing Deadline By Five Days Owing To Festive Season

The government on Sunday announced a five-day extension for filing the GSTR-3B tax return form.

Taxpayers can now submit their returns and make payments for September, as well as for the July–September quarter, up to 25 October.

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) made the announcement through an official notification on Sunday.

Taking to X, the CBIC posted: @cbic_india extends the GSTR-3B filing deadline!”

GSTR-3B is a summary return that must be filed by all businesses registered under GST, either monthly or quarterly.

Ordinarily, the due dates fall on the 20th, 22nd, or 24th of each month, depending on the taxpayer category.

The extension was widely anticipated. The original deadline of 20 October coincides with the Diwali festival, when many businesses and offices remain closed or operate with limited staff.

Experts noted that the decision would bring much-needed relief to businesses and tax professionals struggling to meet compliance timelines during the festive period.

Earlier this year, GSTN clarified that GSTR-3B would continue to be auto-filled using sales data from forms such as GSTR-1. However, any modifications or corrections must be made beforehand through form GSTR-1A.

The revised information will then automatically appear in GSTR-3B.

Once submitted, the form can no longer be edited manually.

The advisory issued on 7 June stated, “For the July 2025 tax period, to be filed in August 2025, the auto-populated tax liability in GSTR-3B will be final and cannot be changed after filing.”

The update aims to enhance data consistency across GST forms and curb potential tax leakage.
