The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has surpassed Rs 4 lakh crore in gross merchandise value (GMV) within just 10 months of the current fiscal year (FY25). As of January 23, GeM’s GMV reached Rs 4.09 lakh crore, marking a nearly 50% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The services segment led the growth, accounting for Rs 2.54 lakh crore, or 62% of the total GMV. The product segment contributed Rs 1.55 lakh crore, making up the remaining 38%. The services sector’s impressive growth, which has nearly doubled from the previous fiscal year, has been key to GeM’s overall success.

In FY25, 19 new service categories were introduced, expanding GeM’s offerings. Services such as debit card printing, bulk email services, and dark fiber leasing have enabled government entities to source from reliable vendors, improving efficiency.

Central government departments have been major contributors to this growth. Ministries of coal, defense, petroleum, power, and steel have led procurement efforts on the platform. The Ministry of Coal, in particular, emerged as the top procurer, with a transacted order value of nearly Rs 1.63 lakh crore.

GeM has processed over 2.59 crore orders since its inception, totaling more than Rs 11.64 lakh crore in GMV. This fiscal year, the platform achieved another milestone by processing 49,960 orders in a single day, showcasing its growing efficiency and widespread adoption.

The continued simplification and reform of the GeM portal have played a key role in its success.
