FIIs Extend Selling Streak To 10 Months; Offload Rs 70,100 Crore In April

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers for the 10th consecutive month in April, offloading Indian equities worth Rs 70,100 crore, according to provisional exchange data.

In contrast, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued to support the market, emerging as net buyers with total investments of Rs 51,000 crore during the same period.

In the past week alone, FIIs sold approximately Rs 13,000 crore, while DIIs infused around Rs 11,500 crore, helping absorb some of the selling pressure.

“A weaker rupee and elevated oil prices have led to selling by the FIIs; they have remained sellers in all four months of the current calendar year, offloading Rs 2,40,750 crore, as per provisional exchange data,” said Pabitro Mukherjee, Associate Vice President–Research, Bajaj Broking.

Rising crude oil prices added to market concerns after the White House confirmed that President Donald Trump had asked officials to prepare for a prolonged blockade of Iranian ports.

Such a move signals potential supply disruptions, particularly through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, and has reignited inflation worries. Market watchers noted that elevated energy prices contributed to FII selling across all four trading sessions last week.

Markets End Week in Red

Indian equity benchmarks ended the week in the red amid sustained FII outflows and rising crude prices. The Nifty declined 0.73 per cent over the week and slipped 0.74 per cent on the last trading day to close at 23,997.

The Sensex fell 582 points, or 0.75 per cent, to settle at 76,913, marking a weekly decline of 0.97 per cent. Analysts expect institutional activity to remain closely tied to global developments, particularly US–Iran negotiations, which could significantly impact geopolitical stability and crude oil price movements.

“The outcome of the state assembly election on Monday will also have an impact on the Indian equity market in the coming week,” said analysts.
