Elon Musk’s X platform is reportedly in the process of developing a downvoting feature aimed at enhancing the ranking of replies on its social media interface.
While there has yet to be an official announcement from the company, findings suggest that this feature may take the form of a “dislike” button rather than a traditional downvote icon akin to Reddit’s system.
Recent code analyses from the X iOS app indicate the presence of a new button resembling a broken heart icon, positioned alongside the existing heart-shaped ‘like’ button.
These findings were in a report by TechCrunch, which noted direct mentions of a ‘downvote’ feature within the app’s code.
This downvoting concept isn’t new; it was initially tested back in 2021, prior to Musk’s acquisition of the platform.
Reverse engineer Aaron Perris (@aaronp613) recently unearthed references in the app that suggest ongoing development of this feature.
His discoveries also include image files indicating the potential design of the button as a broken heart.
Originally, X had experimented with both upvoting and downvoting options for all posts.
However, the current direction appears to focus specifically on implementing downvotes for replies only.
In addition to this, Musk previously announced plans to hide all likes by default for users, further altering the interaction dynamics on the platform.
As X continues to innovate, the downvoting feature could reshape user engagement and content visibility in meaningful ways.
