Domestic Coal-Based Power Generation Increases 8.38% Between April And November

The coal ministry said Saturday that the domestic coal-based power generation climbed 8.38 percent to 779.1 Billion Units (BU) in April-November FY24.

The domestic coal-based power generation was 718.83 BU in the previous year.

In a statement, the coal ministry stated, “India’s power generation increased 7.71 percent in the period under review”.

Overall coal-based power generation increased 11.19 percent year-on-year during the time, owing to an extraordinary spike in temperature, a delayed monsoon in the country’s northern area, and the restoration of full commercial operations post-COVID.

Despite rising power demand, coal imports for blending fell by 44.28 percent in the current fiscal year to 15.16 million tonnes (MT) in November from 27.21 MT in the previous year.

”This shows the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in coal production and minimizing overall coal imports”, the statement reads.

The government is committed to increasing coal output to increase availability and minimize reliance on imported coal, hence protecting foreign reserves.
