The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has approved multiple contracts to quickly boost the Indian Army’s counter-terrorism operations. It used the Emergency Procurement (EP) mechanism for the process.
Calling it ‘a significant move’ for operational readiness, the MoD on Tuesday signed thirteen contracts under EP. These deals aim to enhance troop strength in conflict zones.
The Ministry stated, “These contracts, amounting to ₹1,981.90 crore, have been finalised against an overall sanctioned outlay of ₹2,000 crore for the Indian Army.”
The Army used fast-track procedures under EP to complete the deals. These procurements will improve situational awareness, mobility, protection, and lethality for troops in counter-terrorism operations.
The government approved the contracts to boost both defensive and offensive capabilities. The authorities finalised the procurements in compressed timelines for rapid execution.
Army receives critical combat equipment
The Army has received Bullet Proof Jackets (BPJs), Ballistic Helmets, and Night Sights for Rifles to protect soldiers.
It also acquired Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction Systems (IDDIS), Low-Level Lightweight Radars (LLLR), and Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS), including launchers and missiles.
The Army also received Remotely Piloted Aerial Vehicles (RPAVs), loitering munitions, and VTOL drones. These systems will support precision strikes and monitoring.
The Army also added Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicles (QRFVs), both heavy and medium, to its fleet. These vehicles will help troops move faster and strike harder in high-risk zones.
The MoD said these procurements show its commitment to equipping the Army with modern, critical, and fully indigenous systems. These tools will help tackle emerging threats.
India introduced Emergency Procurement after the 2016 Uri attack. The provision allows the Vice Chiefs of the three services to approve deals up to ₹300 crore.
The EP rule requires contracts to be finalised within 40 days. The suppliers must complete delivery within one year.
The MoD said, “The EP route continues to bridge urgent capability gaps and ensures timely induction of key operational systems.”
Indian Army troops remain active in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism duties in Jammu and Kashmir and the North East.
