Central Government Approves 2 ISTS Schemes To Evacuate 9 GW Renewable Energy

The Central government has given the green light to 2 new Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) schemes aimed at evacuating 9 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy from Rajasthan and Karnataka, the Ministry of Power announced on Saturday.

The ambitious projects, which together require an investment of Rs 13,595 crore, underscore the government’s commitment to bolstering India’s renewable energy infrastructure.

These schemes contribute to the broader goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with 200 GW already interconnected.

Insights:

Rajasthan Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) will see an investment of approximately Rs 12,241 crore for the development of a robust power evacuation system.

This initiative aims to evacuate 4.5 GW of renewable energy from Rajasthan, encompassing 1 GW from the Fatehgarh Complex, 2.5 GW from the Barmer Complex, and 1 GW from the Nagaur (Merta) Complex.

The power will transmit to regions such as Mainpuri, Fatehpur, and Orai in Uttar Pradesh.

Reports indicate the scheme will complete within two years.

In Karnataka, the second scheme involves an investment of Rs 1,354 crore to strengthen the transmission infrastructure.

This initiative however aims to evacuate 4.5 GW of renewable energy from the Koppal and Gadag areas.

Meanwhile, the project is scheduled to be completed by June 2027.

Both projects will execute through the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mode, ensuring transparency and efficiency in project implementation.

The approval of these ISTS schemes marks a significant milestone in our efforts to ramp up renewable energy capacity and strengthen our transmission network,” commented a Ministry of Power spokesperson.

The spokesperson added, “These investments not only support our clean energy goals but also contribute to the economic growth and energy security of the nation.”

The announcement comes amidst India’s heightened focus on renewable energy as a key pillar of its climate change mitigation strategy.
