State-run telecom firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) posted a net profit of ₹280 crore for the quarter ending 31 March 2025. This marks BSNL’s second consecutive profitable quarter after nearly 18 years of losses.

The turnaround reflects a strategic shift under the Modi government’s reforms.

BSNL had reported a loss of ₹849 crore in the same quarter last year.

Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia shared the latest figures at a press briefing.

“For the first time in 18 years, BSNL has recorded back-to-back profits. These are not minor gains but strong net profits,” said Scindia.

Modi Government’s Reforms Push Revival

Scindia compared the current performance with that under the UPA. He cited the ₹280 crore profit in Q4 and ₹261 crore in Q3 as proof of NDA’s reform-driven governance.

“After a ₹14,979 crore loss under Congress, BSNL has returned to profit. This shows the impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focused leadership,” he posted.

BSNL had already reported a ₹262 crore profit in Q3 FY25. These gains helped reduce BSNL’s annual loss to ₹2,247 crore in FY25, down from ₹5,370 crore in FY24.

BSNL’s operating revenue rose 7.8% to ₹20,841 crore in FY25, up from ₹19,330 crore last year.

4G, 5G Rollout & Cost Control Drive Growth

BSNL had faced years of mounting losses. In FY14, under the Congress-led UPA, it reported a ₹14,979 crore loss.

Today, the company is close to posting a full-year profit. The turnaround shows the success of reforms under PM Modi’s government.

BSNL Chairman and Managing Director A Robert J Ravi credited tight cost control and professional leadership.

“BSNL is not only recovering but evolving,” he said. “We are deploying 4G and 5G rapidly. We focus on affordable, high-quality connectivity for all.”

He added that profit is not the end goal. “Our mission is telecom excellence in public service. If we serve and innovate well, profits will follow.”

The Ministry of Communications said BSNL’s revival also comes from capital investment and indigenous technology.

The government pushed 4G/5G with Indian-made equipment and improved fibre networks. It also promoted the network-as-a-service (NaaS) model to expand digital reach.

The ministry noted that rising capital spending may slow short-term profit growth. But it remains optimistic about long-term gains.

BSNL is raising funds through asset monetisation. Asset sales doubled last year and could increase further.
