BSE Index Services, the indexing arm of the Bombay Stock Exchange, introduced four new factor indices on Wednesday, expanding its suite of quantitative investment tools within the BSE 100 large-cap total market capitalisation universe.
Each index applies a five per cent cap at the stock level, ensuring balanced representation across constituents and reducing concentration risk.
The newly launched indices include the BSE Large-Cap 100 Momentum 30, BSE Large-Cap 100 Low Volatility 30, BSE Large-Cap 100 Enhanced Value 30, and BSE Large-Cap 100 Quality 30.
Together, these indices seek to deepen factor-based investment access in India’s large-cap space by offering systematic, rules-driven exposure to differentiated market characteristics.
According to BSE Index Services, all four indices carry a base value of 1000 and a first value date of June 20, 2005. They undergo quarterly reconstitution and incorporate additional liquidity screens to ensure investability.
The construction approach aligns them with global best practices in factor index development.
The Momentum 30 index identifies the 30 companies within the BSE 100 large-cap TMC universe that demonstrate sustained performance leadership, as reflected in momentum scores.
Constituents are weighted according to those scores, allowing the index to amplify companies that show consistent, relative price strength.
Low Volatility 30 Targets Stability
The Low Volatility 30 index focuses on stability. It selects the 30 least volatile stocks within the universe and weights them by inverse volatility, giving investors targeted exposure to companies that exhibit smoother price movements and defensive characteristics.
The Enhanced Value 30 index highlights valuation efficiency. It measures the performance of 30 companies with the most attractive value profiles, based on an analytically derived value score.
Each constituent carries a weight proportional to its score, creating a disciplined value-led strategy.
The Quality 30 index evaluates corporate resilience and operational excellence. It identifies 30 companies that display the strongest quality signatures.
Although the announcement referenced momentum scores, the index’s intended purpose remains to capture companies with high-quality fundamentals, consistent profitability, and disciplined financial metrics.
Constituents are weighted according to quality scoring.
Ashutosh Singh, Managing Director and CEO of BSE Index Services, said the launch builds on the firm’s successful introduction of factor indices within the BSE 500 universe earlier this year.
He noted that the new indices employ a score-only weighting methodology and will reset quarterly, offering precision, transparency, and adaptability for evolving market conditions.
These indices expand opportunities for passive products such as ETFs and index funds. They also offer robust benchmarking tools for portfolio management services, mutual funds, and institutional strategies.
For investors, this expansion opens the door to a wider investment spectrum and enhances the ability to implement diversified, factor-aligned portfolios within the large-cap segment.
