Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled significant infrastructure projects at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit in Guwahati, including six new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals.
These terminals will be strategically located at Chaygaon, New Bongaigaon, Bihara, Hilara, Baihata, and Rangjuli, boosting the region’s railway connectivity.
Vaishnaw also confirmed the introduction of new Vande Bharat Express trains, including one connecting Guwahati and Agartala, enhancing transport options for the Northeast.
Railway & Industrial Growth In Assam
Vaishnaw highlighted the establishment of a Railway Engine Midlife Remanufacturing Facility in Lumding and a Wagon Workshop at Bashbari, both valued at Rs 300 crore.
These initiatives aim to strengthen Assam’s railway infrastructure, driving both economic and industrial growth.
Additionally, a Greenfield Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) at Bongora, Kamrup, with an investment of Rs 120 crore, will further boost the state’s manufacturing sector.
Semiconductor Industry & IT Hub Development
Vaishnaw also revealed plans for a semiconductor plant in Assam, signaling the state’s growing role in electronics manufacturing.
The Union Ministry has upgraded the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) to a Deemed-to-be University, further solidifying Assam’s role as a hub for technology and education.
Additionally, authorities plan to transform Guwahati Railway Station into an IT hub, boosting the region’s digital infrastructure.
Commitment To Assam’s Economic Future
During the session, Vaishnaw praised Assam’s progress, citing the construction of 1,824 km of new railway tracks in the region since 2014.
The government will improve Assam’s connectivity with Bhutan, opening new avenues for economic growth.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma echoed the Union Minister’s sentiments, emphasizing the state’s role as a key player in India’s industrial future.
In a bid to foster international investment, Assam signed MoUs with 10 industry groups from Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan in the semiconductor sector.
This collaboration is expected to position Assam as a key player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
Additionally, Vaishnaw highlighted India’s progress in electronics manufacturing, with domestic production now accounting for over 98% of mobile phones.
