ArcelorMittal Contracts with Siemens Gamesa to Build 166 MW Wind Project.

Siemens Gamesa has inked a supply deal with the Indian division of ArcelorMittal for a project of 166 MW in Andhra Pradesh to provide 46 SG 3.6-145 wind turbines. The company said in a statement that one of its steel facilities will use the clean electricity generated, giving the nation’s steel industry’s decarbonization efforts a much-needed boost. AM Green Energy Private Limited (AMGEPL), a joint venture between ArcelorMittal S.A. and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Limited (AM/NS India), has signed the agreement.

The wind project will be a component of AMGEPL’s 989 MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool District. The energy-intensive steel sector may contribute to a greener future by making significant investments in renewable energy. The AM/NS India steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat, will use the entire amount of power produced by the Kurnool wind farm. This will allow AM/NS India to meet 20% of its electricity needs from renewable sources while also lowering its carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes annually.

Navin Dewaji, CEO of the Asia Pacific region for Siemens Gamesa’s onshore business said, ““This partnership with the world’s second largest steel producer opens up a huge opportunity for the wind industry in India, especially for the power-intensive steel industry which is fast-tracking its efforts to meet carbon emissions goals. We are confident in delivering this landmark project that will help give fresh renewable momentum to the state of Andhra Pradesh.”

While talking about the same Amit Harlalka, Vice President, ArcelorMittal and CFO, AM/NS India said that to speed the attainment of net zero goals by businesses and nations, significant amounts of renewable energy are needed, and we are pleased to have started this journey in India. Our collaboration with Siemens Gamesa on this benchmark model project shows how forming alliances and working together across the supply chain may help us get closer to our decarbonization goals.

Siemens Gamesa will begin supplying wind turbines to this project in Kurnool District in the second quarter of the calendar year 2023. The turbines will be produced at Siemens Gamesa’s plants in India. The project is located in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, which has a lot of potential for wind energy development.

The Andhra Pradesh government’s Renewable Energy Export Policy 2020, which seeks to encourage the export of renewable energy beyond the state, is in accordance with this initiative.
